We are excited to reveal our 2024 medal for the upcoming Swansea University Swansea Half Marathon, which takes place on Sunday 9th June.
In celebration of #10YearsRunning we are delighted to announce that this year’s medal will be made from 100% recycled zinc alloy.
Managing Director, David Martin-Jewell said:
“With our 10th birthday around the corner, we have been working very hard behind the scenes preparing for our landmark event this June. At the beginning of 2023 we developed a commitment to deliver more sustainable events and as a result, have made significant improvements by reducing our carbon footprint. That included the transition to FSC-timber medals and although this was a bold move being the first major race organiser in Wales to do so, we stuck to this commitment truly making us a front-runner in the events industry.
“It feels this year, that runners are warming to them, despite some initial feedback from our 2023 event. Nevertheless, in recognition of our landmark anniversary, we want to give runners the medal they deserve whilst achieving environmental goals and creating a balance for all.”
“We are delighted with how they look and think the runners will love them too!”
Key Facts:
- The medals are created from 100% recycled zinc alloy.
- The detailing includes aspects of the original design from the inaugural event and every year since.
- The medal will have an iconic cut-out marking 10, with a striking coloured enamel and will be embossed with #10YearsRunning on the back of the medal too!
- Zinc alloy is inherently recyclable non-ferrous metal and can be recycled indefinitely without detriment to the material.
- Zinc uses the lowest energy in production on both a per-unit weight and per-unit volume basis, contributing to lower carbon emissions during production (compared to other metals).
