Gordon’s fitness journey began in mid 2020 during the pandemic. Overweight and struggling to keep up with his young children, he decided it was time to make a change. Starting with workout videos and food tracking, Gordon lost 3 ½ stone in six months, which gave him the confidence to take up running through the Couch to 5K program.
But just as he found his stride, heart issues halted his progress. In 2021, Gordon was diagnosed with angina, and by September, he underwent heart surgery.
This life-altering experience didn’t stop him from returning to running just two weeks post-operation. He quickly progressed, setting a personal best at a local parkrun in November 2021. His passion for running continued to grow, culminating in completing over 1000km in 2022 through a virtual Lands End to John O’Groats event.
Crossing the Finish Line
Completing his first half marathon was a monumental moment for Gordon. The rush of the last few hundred yards and the overwhelming emotion of crossing the finish line left him in tears. After months of hard work and training, Gordon felt an immense sense of pride in his personal achievement, sharing the moment with his wife and children.
Reflecting on that day, Gordon recalls the intense heat of the 2023 event and the tough challenges he faced during the race. But the support of the crowd, especially a house spraying cold water on runners, kept him going. The encouragement from others and the physical feat of running helped him push through even the toughest moments.
Health and Recovery
Running has played a vital role in Gordon’s recovery from heart surgery. With careful guidance, he gradually rebuilt his fitness, overcoming physical and mental challenges. While a knee injury in 2024 briefly sidelined him, Gordon is now preparing for the 2025 Swansea Half Marathon, aiming to break the two-hour mark.
A Message of Hope
For Gordon, running is no longer just about fitness—it’s about mental clarity, reflection, and personal growth. After everything he has faced, from weight struggles to heart surgery, running has become a peaceful escape and a tool for problem-solving.
Gordon’s advice for others facing health challenges and considering running is simple:
“Your only race is with yourself. Celebrate your own achievements, whatever they may be.”
As Gordon continues to prepare for the Swansea Half Marathon in 2025, his journey is a powerful reminder that with perseverance and support, it’s possible to overcome even the most significant obstacles.
